Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes long-lasting inflammation and ulcers in the lining of the large intestine (colon) and rectum. It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the digestive tract, leading to symptoms such as abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea (often with blood or mucus), urgency to have bowel movements, fatigue, and weight loss. The condition typically develops in flare-ups followed by periods of remission.
