Thyroid Eye Disease

Thyroid Eye Disease (TED), also called thyroid-associated orbitopathy or Graves’ orbitopathy, is an autoimmune condition that affects the muscles and tissues around the eyes, often in people with thyroid disorders such as Graves’ disease. The immune system mistakenly attacks the tissues behind the eyes, causing inflammation, swelling, and the accumulation of fluid and fat. This can lead to symptoms such as bulging eyes, eye redness, puffiness, double vision, eye pain, and in severe cases, vision impairment. TED can develop before, during, or after the onset of thyroid disease and may fluctuate in severity over time.
