Ankylosing Spondylitis

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease that primarily affects the spine and sacroiliac joints, causing persistent back pain and stiffness, especially in young adults. The inflammation can lead to the gradual fusion of the vertebrae, reducing flexibility and potentially resulting in a forward-stooped posture. Symptoms often worsen with rest and improve with physical activity, and patients may also experience fatigue and inflammation in other areas such as the hips, shoulders, eyes (uveitis), or, less commonly, the heart and lungs.
